Over the years the PERRY ran into a few
things. Thanks to Paul Gerg we now have the correct info for this
picture. Originally I was told that this happened in Mayport but it
happened in Tampa. Paul tried to scan the newspaper article but couldn't
get a good copy, so he re-typed it.
The Tampa Tribune, March 4,1964
{ 1 inch banner headline] Navy ship Rams Barge by Paul Wilder, Tribune staff
writer. A 390 foot Navy radar picket destroyer rammed into a 260 foot
sulphur-laden barge near Egmont key at the entrance of Tampa Bay in an early
morning fog yesterday. No one was injured. The U.S.S. N.K. Perry limped into
Tampa with a 20 foot long gash in its bow just above the water line. She was
towed by the Hillsborough Towing Co.
